Pepe Reina won’t declare undying love for Liverpool FC
With Fernando Torres having followed Xabi Alonso and Alvaro Arbeloa out of the Anfield exit doors, speculation has intensified that Pepe Reina will follow his compatriots in the summer and seek pastures new.
Reina signed for Liverpool in 2005 and has been an outstanding goalkeeper for the Merseyside club although an interview with The Guardian leaves supporters no clearer in understanding whether the player is likely to stay at Anfield.
He said: “I am not announcing my departure – far from it. I’ve said lots of times I’m very happy in England and comfortable at Liverpool.
“But I’m not prepared to swear eternal love to anyone. That’s impossible. Any player who says that is lying.
“I can’t say much because I have a contract with Liverpool. But eternal love doesn’t exist. No one is master of his own destiny. When a player is at club he has to give everything – that is all you can ask of him.”
Reina is similar to Torres in that he wants Liverpool to challenge for honours, although the only piece of silverware that the club can now win is the Europa League.
