It is probably not a good idea to contradict Mick McCarthy in the lead-up to Wednesday’s Carling Cup match against Manchester City, with the Wolves boss not pulling any punches when asked about the so-called fans that booed their team and manager during Saturday’s 2-2 draw with Swansea.
“Let me clear something up. It [the negative support] doesn’t help,” the manager said “Let’s not give them any credit. Let’s not give any of the dissenting voices, the mindless idiots that do it, any credit whether it’s aimed at me, Karl Henry, Andy Keogh or Stephen Ward.
“Do not give them any credence or any credit for getting us playing well or getting a result. They don’t deserve any of that. There was no credit given to any of them at all for the 2-2 draw.”
Even so, Wolves need to get a win under their belts as quickly as possible, with Victor Chandler (£25 free bet) offering 13/2 that this victory comes on Wednesday night against a Manchester City team that will bear little resemblance to the side that thrashed Manchester United 6-1.
Roberto Mancini would like to win every competition this season, although Saturday’s home game against the same team takes on extra importance, not to mention next week’s trip to Villarreal which City could do with winning.
The bookmakers still expect the visitors to come through and Ladbrokes (£50 free betting) offer a best price 8/15 about City claiming a place in the quarter final, with Edin Dzeko, Samir Nasri and Owen Hargreaves among the players who could get a run out at Molineux.
Hargreaves hasn’t figured for City since scoring in the previous round against Birmingham City, although 20/1 looks a decent price about the former Manchester United midfielder.
