While England and Argentina are both strong favourites to win the later Saturday matches, the bookmakers are expecting a more evenly-matched contest when these teams clash in the lunchtime game at Port Elizabeth.
Greece are the marginal favourites (7/4 betfair) to get off to a winning start, although they don’t come into this competition with the best of form, having lost to Paraguay and only drawn 2-2 with North Korea, a team that are expected to be soundly beaten by everyone in Group G. Nevertheless, manager Otto Rehhagel steered the team to Euro 2004 glory and they have a hotshot striker in the form of Theofanis Gekas. He’s the 7/1 favourite (Stan James) to break the deadlock at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium.
The South Koreans look a tasty wager at odds of 2/1 (bet365), especially as they qualified so comfortably and come into this competition showing some great form. They were only narrowly beaten by Spain in a recent friendly and boast the best player on the pitch in the form of Ji-Sung Park. The Manchester United midfielder is 12/1 (Sky Bet) to open the scoring and loves to go forward for his national team.
Ladbrokes offer the draw at 11/5, although it’s worth noting that none of Korea’s last twelve matches have ended all square. It’s a strange statistic when you consider that ten of their fourteen Asian qualifiers featured less than three goals, something which might make the Under 2.5 Goals an attractive bet at odds of 8/15 (Stan James).
