While Kauto Star is the hot favourite to win the King George VI Chase for a fifth consecutive occasion this weekend, there are some that believe that the horse’s stable-mate will give him a run for his money.

The Nightingale has been the subject of a sustained gamble this week and trainer Paul Nicholls is certainly not dismissing his charge, with all the each-way money coming for a horse that should be suited to the soft ground.

“The ground on Boxing Day might have been a bit quick for him, so it’s worked well for him, in respect of the ground this weekend. Obviously he has to improve enormously on what he has done, but he’s quite a progressive young horse,” he told At The Races.

“People have been looking for a bit of each-way value and something that goes on the ground. if Kauto wasn’t in the race I would really fancy him strongly.

“He ran really well at Down Royal, loves going right-handed and he could run into the frame if he improves.

“If the handicapper is right he’s got a chance of being placed.”
