With just two games left to play, Watford have dispensed with the services of manager Nigel Pearson. The Hornets lost 3-1 to fellow strugglers West Ham United at the weekend and that result has left them three points above the danger zone with two games left to play.
Watford should have done enough to secure their Premier League status for another season although they do have a tough run-in with games against Arsenal and Manchester City on the horizon. Pearson had managed to haul the Hornets off the foot of the Premier League table and give them a solid opportunity to avoid relegation, however the side’s recent rejuvenation appears to have been cut short following the sacking of the former Leicester City boss.
While Pearson has certainly fulfilled his remit since being installed as Watford boss, the sacking looks to have been a direct result of a deteriorating relationship with the club owners. Head coach Craig Shakespeare has also left the club and U23 boss Hayden Mullins has been placed in the hot-seat on an interim basis.
Pearson had allegedly been told that he wouldn’t be remaining as Watford boss even if he did manage to secure the club’s Premier League status at the end of the campaign. Pearson was the third manager to be sacked by Watford since the start of the 2019/20 campaign, the others being Javi Gracia and Quique Sanchez Flores.
As things stand, Claude Puel is favourite to take the reins before the start of the new season, the former Leicester City and Southampton boss a 6/4 punt to take charge at Vicarage Road.
