Middlesbrough v Crystal Palace, Saturday 3pm
Tony Mowbray has replaced Gordon Strachan as the permanent manager of Middlesbrough and the Scot has 32 matches to steer the club away from the relegation zone and potentially into a play-off place this season.
Boro lost at home to Bristol City last Saturday, although they have an excellent opportunity to register victory this Saturday and Blue Square offers 5/6 that the Teeside team beat the only side below them in the Championship table.
Mowbray will be hoping that Kris Boyd’s opener last weekend sparks a glut of goals from the former Rangers man and he’s 11/2 (Victor Chandler) to score the first goal, while Scott McDonald (11/2 Coral) is likely to be his partner in crime against the Eagles.
Crystal Palace have struggled this term and their away form has seen them lose five of seven matches on the road. However, they did recently come away from Norwich with three points and can be backed at 7/2 (bet365) to win this game.
Derby County v Portsmouth, Saturday 5.20pm
There’s an intriguing televised encounter taking place at Pride Park on Saturday night between two of the most in-form teams in the division. Derby are the 11/8 favourites (Stan James) to win and the Rams were comfortable 4-1 winners over Watford last weekend, something which means they sit just outside the play-off positions.
However, Portsmouth are enjoying a nice run of their own and can be backed at 9/4 (Victor Chandler) to continue their recovery from a slow start to the season by winning in the Midlands. Steve Cotterill deserves credit for the way he has kept the team together while the club fought the threat of liquidation and Liam Lawrence is proving to be an inspired signing for the south coast club. Paddy Power make him an 11/1 chance to score first.
Derby also have some lively attacking players and Tomasz Cywka’s two goals suggests that the Pole is overpriced at 8/1 (Victor Chandler) to score the first one in front of the TV cameras. Kris Commons is a 7/1 chance (Coral) as Nigel Clough’s team aim for their fifth home win of the campaign.
Cardiff City v Swansea City, Sunday 1.10pm
No great surprise to see this fixture time moved for what is one of the spiciest derbies that exist in British football. There should be a tremendous atmosphere at the City of Cardiff Stadium and the Bluebirds are strong favourites at even money (Blue Square) to come away with the three points.
It’s a decent price about Dave Jones’ team considering they are top of the Championship and have a plethora of great attacking players such as Craig Bellamy (6/1 bet365), Michael Chopra (6/1 bet365) and Peter Whittingham (8/1 Betfred).
However, Swansea City sit third in the table and are unbeaten in their last six league games. The most recent match was a 3-0 victory at Crystal Palace and you can back Brendan Rodgers’ team at 3/1 (Ladbrokes) to stun the league leaders with a victory.
