While Manchester United supporters celebrate their 19th Premier League title and look forward to clashing with Barcelona in the Champions League final, Sir Alex Ferguson has today revealed that life could have been much different for the Red Devils.

Ferguson has been at Old Trafford since 1986, although he has disclosed that Arsenal made him the offer to become their manager just months before he took the United post, with the Gunners wanting Walter Smith at Highbury to assist Ferguson.

Ferguson said: “I was offered the Arsenal job and I wanted to take Walter with me.

“So I said to him ‘Do you fancy coming with me?’ Then he dropped the bombshell that he was going to Rangers.

“The thing about the Arsenal offer was that they wanted an answer right away but I couldn’t give them one because I was going to the World Cup in Mexico with Scotland.

“So the Arsenal thing fell by the wayside. Walter went to Rangers and then later that year I went to Manchester United.”

Ferguson made these revelations in Tuesday’s match programme for the Rangers v Dundee United clash, the last match at Ibrox for Walter Smith.
