The Hennessy Gold Cup is a Grade 3 handicap at Newbury that will see some fine horses compete over 21 fences, but which one has the edge?

Aiteen Thirtythree is the current bookies’ favourite at best odds of 11/2 (Ladbrokes – £50 free bets). The Irish seven-year-old won twice at Newbury last season but was beaten by Somersby last time out at Kempton at the end of October. With Ruby Walsh in the saddle he could do good things, but there is a nagging doubt given the standard of opposition here.

Second favourite Great Endeavour is fresh from a fine win in the Paddy Power Gold Cup at Cheltenham earlier in the month, and we think the David Pipe-trained gelding is the class act in this impressive field. Though this will be his first run at Newbury, we fancy him to do the business at a best price of 13/2 (bet365 – £200 free betting).

There has been some decent money coming in for Wayward Prince, trained by Ian Williams. Rated as one of the best novice steeplechasers last season, this could be the ideal race to show what he’s capable of. Available at 8/1 (Betfred), but likely to come in, he could be a real contender here.

A decent each-way shot at long odds of 33/1 (Boyelsports) is Tullamore Dew. With bookies paying a quarter of the odds for a top four finish, the nine-year-old can bounce back from a fall at the aforementioned Paddy Power Gold Cup and could well challenge the leaders. With a weight of only 10-0, he has a fair chance of emulating the form he showed to place third in the Centenary Novices Handicap Chase at the Cheltenham Festival last season.

Overall though, we suggest Great Endeavour will be the horse to back and the one to beat in the Hennessy Gold Cup.
