We regularly see opposition players locking horns on the field of play, although it’s a different matter to see a senior player clashing with an assistant manager on the touchline.
That was the sight that greeted us on Tuesday night, with Gennaro Gattuso pushing Joe Jordan in the face during the Champions League match between Milan and Tottenham before head-butting the 59-year-old at the final whistle.
It is no surprise to hear that UEFA have opened disciplinary proceedings against the midfielder who is set to receive a ban, despite his apology after the match.
“I lost control,” said Gattuso. “There is no excuse for what I did. I take my responsibilities for that,” added the 33-year-old Milan captain.
“I was nervous. We were both speaking Scottish, something that I learned when I played in his home city of Glasgow, but I can’t tell you what we said.
“I didn’t want to argue with players and I did it with him, but I was wrong to do what I have done. I will have to await what they decide.”
