The Toffees suffered their heaviest Premier League loss in 15 months when losing 4-1 at home to West Brom on Saturday and it’s a result which might have been avoided had Mikel Arteta not stamped on an opponent and Everton’s forwards not missed so many chances.
Jermaine Beckford was particularly culpable in front of goal and David Moyes has called on the former Leeds striker to be more clinical and help Everton away from the foot of the Premier League.
“At this level you can’t afford to miss chances like that”, said Moyes. We’ve said the last few weeks that we have been punished for our poor finishing, and nowhere was that more apparent than here.
“Look what happened. Beckford had a great chance that had we scored then maybe we were close to winning the game, and instead we have the double whammy of the miss and we get a player sent off.
“I think for him, he needs a much better goals ratio than that, because it’s not often you get so many chances at this level.
“It doesn’t matter what level you are at, you have to put some of those away.”
Many will argue that Beckford simply isn’t good enough to thrive at Premier League level although he’s at least getting himself into positions to score goals.
