Former Three Lions boss Steve McClaren has been backed into odds-on to take over at Dundee United, a rash of bets on such an appointment resulting is his odds being slashed dramatically from around 6/1 to a general 1/3. Over the past 36 hours, a reported 62% of all bets on the ‘Next Dundee United Manager’ betting market have backed the former England international manager taking the reins at the Tayside club. As such, McClaren has leapfrogged former favourite Malky Mackay, the latter now out at 9/4 to take over from Robbie Neilson. During the same period, Mackay has attracted around 18% of all bets in the market.

Sacked

McClaren’s last spell in management was at Queens Park Rangers, however he was sacked from the Championship club in April 2019 following a dismal campaign, the seven-match losing run that his club embarked upon being the longest in the second-tier in 2018/19.

Scotland

No suitors have come forward for McClaren south of the border and as such it looks as though his immediate future lies in Scotland. With Dundee United having hauled themselves back into the Scottish Premiership, the Tayside outfit are an exciting prospect and given that McClaren has endured a string of failures, a different footballing culture could prove to be just what he needs in order to get things back on track.

Two-horse race

This is now very much a two-horse race with third-favourite in the betting being Tommy Wright, the former St Johnstone manager way out at 12/1. Austin McPhee is next in the betting at 16/1 alongside Peter Lovenkrands at the same odds. 20/1 shots include Barry Robson, Micky Mellon, Lee McCulloch, Jon Daly and Craig Levein.
