Chelsea v Aston Villa, 1.30pm

At the start of the season, Chelsea quickly went odds-on to win the Premier League and they were described by Roberto Mancini as the side that were head and shoulders above everyone else. However, the Blues have well and truly hit the buffers in November and December, with Carlo Ancelotti’s team unable to drop too many points if they are to remain in the hunt for a title tilt.

Chelsea are massive favourites at odds of 2/7 (Coral) to win on Sunday and they appear to be playing Aston Villa at the right time. The Villans were thrashed 4-0 by Manchester City on Tuesday and you can get odds of 12/1 (Ladbrokes) that the English champions win by the same scoreline. FlorentMalouda was back on the scoresheet during the Blues’ recent 1-0 win over Bolton and the Frenchman is 6/1 with Stan James to break the deadlock.

Carlo Ancelotti will have been pleased that his team finally kept a clean sheet against Wanderers and perhaps that will mark the start of things to come. Ladbrokes offer 11/10 that Chelsea win to nil, with the west London side available at 8/11 (Paddy Power) to lead at half-time and full-time.

Villa are desperately seeking a win, especially as they sit just one point above the relegation zone and the Midlands side are 12/1 with bet365 to pull off their best result of the season. It hasn’t helped that Gerard Houllier has fallen out with several senior players at the club, although Victor Chandler go 5/1 that the visitors land a draw which is what they achieved when the teams met at Villa Park earlier this season.

Wigan Athletic v Newcastle United, 4pm

Many people have written off the Latics as relegation fodder this season, especially after heavy defeats against Blackpool and Chelsea at the start of the season. However, there’s no denying that Roberto Martinez is an astute young manager and their draw on Wednesday against Arsenal means that Wigan are out of the bottom three and will now be looking to rise up the table.

Athletic are four games unbeaten and are slight favourites at 6/4 with bet365 to beat Newcastle on Sunday, with the home side having to contend without Charles N’Zogbia after the Frenchman was sent off against the Gunners. However, Hugo Rodallega is looking sharp in attack and the Colombian can be backed at 11/2 with bet365 to score the opening goal of the game.

Newcastle got off to a flying start under Alan Pardew when beating Liverpool 3-1, although they have since been beaten at home to Manchester City and away at Tottenham. The Magpies are 2/1 with Victor Chandler to collect the three points at the DW Stadium and they will welcome back Kevin Nolan from suspension, with the United captain available at 8/1 (Paddy Power) to score the opening goal of the game.

Neither team seem particularly adept at keeping clean sheets and the Over 2.5 Goals quote could be worth taking at odds of 11/10 (Boylesports) even if Andy Carroll is missing in attack for the visitors. Wigan’s last two home matches have finished with a 2-2 scoreline and William Hill offer 16/1 that this happens again.
