There’s something of a defensive crisis at Stamford Bridge at the moment. Chelsea were boasting a fine defensive record at home which involved not conceding a goal until Sunderland tore up that particular stat by winning 3-0 last Sunday.

John Terry and Alex were missing for that match and the central defensive duo could both be out for several weeks, although the Brazilian was strangely named as a substitute for his country against Argentina during the week, something which caused raised eyebrows at Chelsea.

Chelsea had said: “Further to the Chelsea medical team’s diagnosis, the Brazilian national team doctors agree that further investigation via arthroscopic surgery is required on the player’s right knee. That will take place over the coming days.”

However, Alex not only warmed up with his compatriots but Mano Menezes also seemed prepared to use him if necessary.

“We have good relations and agreed we’d only use him for a few minutes at most,” he said.

John Terry has flown out to Italy regarding a nerve problem that the player has had for some time, with the defender unaware of when he will next play.

“I’m at my wits’ end,” he said. “I know I won’t play on Saturday against Birmingham City, but beyond that there are no clues. It could be weeks, it could be months.”
